Hold on to your knickers. You’re about to witness another example of progressive privilege, as yet another elected Democrat, this time at the state level, gets away with what could be a federal crime—publicly calling for the assassination of the sitting president of the United States.

On Thursday, Democrat state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal was engaged in a comment thread on her personal Facebook page with a friend, who said he had a family member on President Donald Trump’s Secret Service security detail.

He commented, “What I posted earlier, I truly believe will happen, sooner … not later.” The friend went on to suggest that he might experience an unwelcome visit by the Secret Service. Chappelle-Nadal replied, “No. I will. I hope Trump is assassinated!”

If this were her first incidence of incendiary remarks, perhaps an apology and a sit-down with the president could begin to smooth the situation over. When the local newspaper reached out for comment, Chappelle-Nadal did offer an apology.

Reportedly, Chappelle-Nadal will receive a visit from the Secret Service to ascertain her intentions, which were likely benign. It is doubtful that she actually intended to incite an attempt on the life of the president. But reverse the situation. Do you recall the bottomless well of rage at any public repudiation of President Barack Obama? Every person who criticized him was promptly labeled a virulent racist.

The state senator immediately went on KMOX radio to call for President Trump to apologize for enabling white nationalists. She denied the possibility of resignation. You would think Chappelle-Nadal would be open to resignation; earlier in the week she deleted a Holocaust themed tweet sent from her account to Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, who is of Jewish extraction. Her activity on social media isn’t fit for an elected official who lives on taxpayer funds and is supposed to work on behalf of her constituents.

Instead of getting worked up, isn’t this just par for the course for Democrats? Sure, Sen. Claire McCaskill and Congressman Lacey Clay have both called for Chappelle-Nadal to resign, as have others on the Democratic side. But will they force her to? Will they sit her down and inform her that her numerous verbal flubs and social media meltdowns are now at an end?

Chappelle-Nadal once said on MSNBC, “This is our race war,” speaking about the violent protests that ravaged the once peaceful town of Ferguson in the suburbs of St. Louis, Mo. While this was in 2014, Chappelle-Nadal’s history is replete with examples of poor judgment. In 2011, she threatened to cut the throat of Jamilah Nasheed: “If I had a knife, I’d cut your [expletive] throat.” They were attending a Lil’ Wayne concert. Nasheed is a Democrat who serves at the state legislature with Chappelle-Nadal.

The recent Facebook comment calling for the assassination of President Trump by Chappelle-Nadal is abominable behavior, but especially so for an elected official. The calls for her to resign certainly have merit, but do not go far enough. She should be recalled, as she has publicly refused to step down. When asked repeatedly to step down, Chappelle-Nadal has replied, “I’m not resigning. Legislators cheat on their wives or smoke marijuana and are not asked to resign. I’m not resigning over a simple mistake.”

Yet resignation is exactly what Democrats would insist upon if she were a Republican making the same asinine, irresponsible, harmful type of statements.
