Do you enjoy contemporary Christian music? I certainly do. The songs are lyrically encouraging and truly uplifting.

But what of our old hymns? Increasingly hymns are being drummed out of use for many well-intentioned reasons.  I was reminded of the power of singing hymns a few years ago during Bible Study Fellowship: 450 women joined in song:

Holy, Holy Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee… Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty. God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

By the third verse many of us began to weep. In my heart I knew that we had briefly glimpsed Heaven.  Later that day I ordered a used hymnal to facilitate singing praise and worship songs at home.

I will always enjoy the upbeat mainstream sound of Contemporary Christian music.  But the hymns will always tug at my heartstrings.
